Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I get to the hotel from Frankfurt Airport or Zurich Airport?
    From Frankfurt Airport to Kirchzarten: Take an ICE (Intercity-Express) train from Frankfurt Airport to Freiburg Hauptbahnhof (Main Station). From Freiburg, transfer to a regional train (Breisgau S-Bahn) heading to Kirchzarten. Once you arrive in Kirchzarten, a shuttle or bus will transport you directly to the hotel. From Zurich Airport to Zell im Wiesental: Take a direct train from Zurich Airport to Basel SBB (Swiss Main Station). From Basel, transfer to a regional train (S6 line) heading to Zell im Wiesental. From Zell im Wiesental, a shuttle or buses will transport you to the hotel. We recommend checking the train schedules in advance and booking tickets for the ICE or other long-distance trains.
  • Can I rent a car?
    Yes, car rentals are available at both Frankfurt and Zurich airports. Driving through the Black Forest is a scenic experience. The hotel has free parking for guests.
  • Can I take a bus from Kirchzarten or Zell im Wiesental to the hotel?
    Yes, buses are available to reach the hotel: From Kirchzarten, take the regional bus (7215) toward Busbahnhof (Bus Station), Todtnau and alight at Todtnauberg Sternen, Todtnau. The hotel is a 9 minutes walk from there. From Zell im Wiesental, take the regional bus (7300) toward Titisee, Bahnhof (Station) and alight at Todtnau Busbahnhof (Bus Station). From there, take the bus (7215) toward Kirchzarten, Bahnhof (Station) and alight at Todtnauberg Sternen, Todtnau. The hotel is a 9 minutes walk from there. We recommend checking the local bus schedules and routes in advance. Alternatively, shuttles are also available for direct transfer from Kirchzarten or Zell im Wiesental.
  • When should I arrive?

  • Is it OK to come a bit later or leave earlier?
    Since we hope for an intense exchange of ideas, we hope that all participants stay for the entire duration of the workshop. However, you may stay additional nights in the venue before or after the workshop---let us know if you are interested in that.
  • Will transportation be provided to and from the airport?
    Transportation is not provided from the airport, but shuttles are available from Kirchzarten (for those arriving from Frankfurt or the north) and Zell im Wiesental (for those arriving from Zurich or the south).
  • What are the closest international airports?
    The nearest major airport in Germany is Frankfurt Airport (FRA), which is approximately 3 to 3.5 hours away by car. Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland is another option, located about 2 hours away by car.
  • Are accommodations included in the workshop payment?
    Yes, your workshop registration includes 5 nights stay at the Bergseele Privat- & Retreathotel Schwarzwald from 20. July 2025. Additional nights can be booked directly with the hotel.
  • Will I share a room?

  • What ammenities does the accommodation offer?
    The accommodation has an indoor pool (don't forget your swimming gear) and a sauna.
  • Can I bring a guest?
    Yes, guests are welcome. Please inform us in advance to arrange accommodations and meals. Additional fees may apply.
  • I have dietary restrictions. Can you accommodate them?
    Absolutely. Please specify your dietary needs during registration, and we will ensure your requirements are met.
  • Are meals included during the workshop?
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, water, and tee are offered by the hotel and included in the workshop price. Other drinks are available for a surcharge. Exceptions are dinners on Tuesday and Thursday, participants will pay for food and drinks themselves.
  • Will there be any outdoor activities?
    Yes, the workshop incorporates outdoor activities designed to inspire creativity and provide a change of perspective. These include guided discussions and reflective exercises set amidst the natural beauty of the Black Forest. The aim is to enhance focus and stimulate innovative thinking in a relaxed, scenic environment. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • What is the cancellation policy?
    Cancellations made up to April 1. 2025 will receive a full refund. After this date, partial refunds may be available.
  • Is there a discount for student researchers?
    Yes, student researchers are eligible for a discount. If you qualify, a promotion code for the discount is included in your invoice. Please make sure to enter the code during the payment process to apply the discount.
  • Who can I contact for an invitation letter?
    Please email us at mathematicaldatascience@gmail.com to request an official invitation letter for your visa application. Include your full name, passport details, and any other necessary information.
  • Do I need a visa to attend the workshop in Germany?
    Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Participants from the US, Japan, and most European countries typically do not require a visa for short stays in Germany (up to 90 days for tourism or business). However, please check the specific requirements for your country.
  • How do I apply for a visa to Germany?
    If you require a visa to attend the workshop, follow these steps: 1. Determine the Visa Type: Apply for a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) for business purposes. 2. Prepare Your Documents: You will need: - A valid passport (with at least 6 months of validity remaining). - A completed visa application form. - Proof of workshop registration and invitation letter (contact us for a formal letter). - Proof of accommodation (your booking at the Bergseele Hotel). - Proof of travel (flight/train tickets). - Travel insurance covering medical emergencies up to €30,000. - Financial proof (bank statements or proof of employment). 3. Submit Your Application: Schedule an appointment at the German embassy or consulate in your country. Bring all required documents to your appointment.
